Hydraulic cylinder repair

Leaking, drifting, bent, or damaged? Start with a careful evaluation of the cylinder and the application.

Start with what you notice

Signs the cylinder needs attention.

You do not need to diagnose the failure. Describe the symptom, the equipment, and what changed.

Leaks

Visible fluid at the rod, gland, fittings, barrel, or end connections.

Drift or weak motion

The cylinder will not hold position, moves slowly, or no longer develops the expected force.

Rod or barrel damage

Scoring, pitting, bending, impact damage, or other visible wear needs inspection.

Binding or uneven travel

Jerky, incomplete, noisy, or misaligned movement can point to a larger equipment problem.

A clear repair path

From evaluation to return.

The exact repair is based on inspection. No process step, component replacement, or test requirement is assumed before the cylinder is evaluated.

  1. 01

    Understand the application

Confirm the equipment, symptoms, operating context, and timing.

  2. 02

    Disassemble and inspect

Evaluate seals, rod, barrel, gland, piston, and related wear or damage.

  3. 03

    Define the repair

Determine what can be restored, what must be replaced, and where machining or component work is appropriate.

  4. 04

    Rebuild

Complete the agreed repair and reassemble around the confirmed requirements.

  5. 05

    Verify and return

Inspection and functional testing are matched to the actual job before return to service.

Past work

Large cylinders are reviewed job by job.

Lenex has worked on cylinders up to approximately 35 feet long and 16 inches in bore. These examples are not published maximums.

Acceptance depends on the cylinder’s condition, extent of damage, handling requirements, and proposed repair scope. Provide dimensions and equipment information for review →

Repair capability

Most cylinder work stays in-house.

The repair plan is based on inspection, component condition, and the most practical path back to service.

Seals and rebuild components

Lenex stocks a broad assortment of seals and can make replacement components when the job requires them.

Barrel work and honing

Barrel work and honing are performed in-house as part of the confirmed repair scope.

Hard parts and specialty work

Lenex makes many components in-house and coordinates outside sourcing for hard parts when necessary.

Rod evaluation and rechroming

Rod condition is evaluated with the full repair. Rechroming is usually considered when larger rod sizes make it economically practical.

On-site line boring

Line boring is currently performed on-site. Location, access, dimensions, and scheduling are confirmed for each job.

Repair verification

Every cylinder repair is tested.

Testing is performed during every cylinder and hydraulic motor repair. The appropriate test and acceptance checks are determined by the component and the confirmed repair scope.

Current testing scope

  • Cylinders: tested during every repair
  • Hydraulic motors: tested during every repair
  • Valves and pumps: testing is not currently available for every job

For valve or pump work, call Lenex to confirm the available repair and testing scope before bringing in the component.

Timing and estimates

Lead time follows the condition of the unit.

Standard lead times depend on the unit’s condition as received, the repair scope, and any parts or outside services required.

Diagnostic and inspection fee

A diagnostic and inspection fee may apply in some cases, up to $150. Confirm the expected fee when arranging the inspection.

01

Initial guidance

Any estimate or timing guidance provided before inspection is preliminary.

02

Inspection and disassembly

The unit must be at the shop and disassembled before the full condition and repair requirements can be confirmed. Some repairs cannot be quoted until disassembly is complete.

Connected capability

More than a seal change.

When inspection finds damaged components, Lenex can coordinate the cylinder work with machining or remaking appropriate parts. The repair path still depends on the condition, application, and agreed scope.

Warranty and service terms

Applicable warranty and service terms are provided in writing at the bottom of Lenex invoices. Refer to the invoice for the terms governing the specific job, or call Lenex with questions.

Before you start

Good questions.
Clear next steps.

Repair options, scope, materials, timing, and service arrangements are confirmed for the actual job.

Can I start without knowing what failed?

Yes. Describe the symptoms and the equipment. Inspection determines the repair approach; you do not need to diagnose the cylinder first.

Can damaged components be repaired or remade?

Lenex can coordinate cylinder repair with machining and component work. The available options depend on the condition and application of the specific cylinder.

What should I bring with the cylinder?

Bring identification and equipment information, and describe the problem. Contact Lenex to confirm handling and drop-off arrangements before transporting a large assembly.

Tell us what needs to work.
